Fast Five Review: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

2016 | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.

1) Did you like it?

2) Why?

Plot-wise and character-wise, Fantastic Beasts was nothing special, but I couldn’t resist another jump into J. K. Rowling’s magical world. It’s just so imaginative and fun!

Eddie Redmayne plays an awkward, quiet, somewhat eccentric wizard named Newt Scamander, a writer of a textbook that would decades later be read by the one and only Harry Potter. Having devoted his life to understanding all the creatures inhabiting the magical world, Newt carries around with him a suitcase that is actually also a door to his lab, which opens up to large areas where these creatures can live in an environment that suits them. It was wonderful to see all these different creatures.

3) “You would enjoy this movie if…”

You like the Harry Potter world and would love to be immersed in it from a perspective that’s not Harry’s.

4) “This movie made me think about…”

What else can be done with this magical world that J. K. Rowling has created! Fantastic Beasts focuses on only a very small aspect and location of the world, and it’ll be really interesting to see how wizards and witches living in other countries view and use magic.
