Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
2016 | M | Science Fiction, Action

We all know about Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia, and how they defeated Darth Vader and brought down the Empire. But – an even longer time ago, in a galaxy further away – there was another band of heroes just as daring, whose actions helped save the galaxy. This is their story…

1) Did you like it?

I did. I’m one of those Star Wars nerds fans who was really, really hyped when The Phantom Menace came out back in 1999, and…well, the less said about that movie, the better, okieday? Finally, in Rogue One, Star Wars fans have a prequel that stacks up to the original trilogy.

2) Why?

While 2015’s hugely successful Star Wars sequel, The Force Awakens was essentially a remake of the first film – an immensely enjoyable movie, but a remake nonetheless – Rogue One has an original story to tell, and it marks a distinct shift in tone from the other movies in the series. We know from the film’s opening moments that this is going to be something different. There’s no familiar yellow scrolling text at the start of the film, no soaring Star Wars theme music to set the scene. There are no cute, chatty droids – Rogue One’s K-2SO owes more to Douglas Adams’ Marvin than C3-PO. And there’s only one glimpse of a lightsabre; a moment that will send shivers down your spine, whether you’re a Star Wars fan or not. That’s what I like about Rogue One – it takes risks…and they’re risks that, for the most part, work.

3) You would enjoy this movie if…

Well, obviously if you’re a Star Wars fan, you won’t want to miss Rogue One. Just keep in mind that this is a darker, bleaker and more violent look into the Star Wars universe than ever before. It’s definitely not for kids.

4) This movie made me think about…

How great it would have been if Rogue One were just a leeettle bit longer, so we could get to know these characters better…

5) Overall rating?

4.5-stars
