Top Ten September New Releases

newreleasesbannerPinch and a punch for the first day of the month, no returns!! Welcome to September, welcome to Spring – and welcome to our monthly Top Ten New Releases post. We’ve got some great new movies and TV shows we can’t wait to share with you. Ready? Let’s take a look at just a few of our newest additions coming out in September – as always, they’re in no particular order…

Wonder Womanwonderwomandvd

Genre: Action
Classification: M
Audience: Adult
Release Date: September 20

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained as an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat…

Believe it or not, Wonder Woman is the first blockbuster superhero film starring a woman since Elektra was released back in 2005. It’s also the first female-directed live action film to have a budget in excess of $100 million – and, while on the subject of money, Wonder Woman grossed over $100 million on debut in America alone. That’s the biggest premiere of all time for a female director. Hopefully Hollywood gets the hint – and soon. Until then, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman will be back in cinemas later this year in Justice League. We can’t wait!

Pierre Coffin, the director behind all three Despicable Me films (as well as spinoff, Minions) provides the voices for Kevin, Bob, Stu and all the other Minion characters. Viceroy’s Houseviceroyshousedvd

Genre: Drama
Classification: PG
Audience: Adult
Release Date: September 20

New Dehli, March 1947. The huge and stately Viceroy’s Palace is like a beehive in preparation for the arrival of Lord Louis Mountbatten, who has just been appointed new (and last) viceroy of India by prime minister Clement Attlee. Meanwhile, in the staff quarters, a love story is born between Jeet, a Hindu, and Aalia, a Muslim beauty. Sparks are set to fly – both on a geopolitical and a personal level.

The first film released simultaneously in England in both Hindi and English versions, Viceroy’s House tells the story of the partition of India. It’s a side of Indian history that British-born director, Gurinder Chadha (some of her other films include Bend It Like Beckham, and Bride and Prejudice) was inspired to bring to life on the screen after she learned about her family’s history on the BBC show, Who Do You Think You Are? You can read an interview with Gurinder here.

Cleverman clevermans2dvdSeason 2

Genre: Television series, Drama
Classification: MA15+
Audience: Adult
Release Date: September 27

Koen, still learning to truly harness his powers as the Cleverman, is the only one who can stop the bloodshed between human and Hairy. Ranged against him is the full force of government, aided by his brother Waruu, who is now empowered by Hairy strength within him, and who has created the one thing which can negate Koen’s powers, and render him mortal.

Set in the near future, Cleverman is smart, Australian sci-fi that’s taking on the world. The show’s creator, Ryan Griffen, was inspired by his young son’s love of superheroes. “I wanted to create an Aboriginal superhero that he could connect with,” says Griffen “a character that would empower him to stand and fight when presented with racism. Just like the old dreaming stories, Cleverman would be able to teach moral lessons; not only for my son, not just for Aboriginal people, but for many more out there as well”. If you missed Season One, here it is.

Rough Nigroughnightdvdht

Genre: Comedy
Classification: MA15+
Audience: Adult
Release Date: September 27

Jess is an engaged politician who reunites with three of her college friends for a wild bachelorette weekend in Miami. As their night of hard partying takes a hilariously dark turn and the friends attempt to cover up their accidental crime, they find themselves becoming closer when it matters most.

While some actors hire vocal coaches when they need to learn how to speak with an accent, Kate McKinnon, who plays an Australian character in Rough Night, took a DIY approach to tackling an Aussie accent: she started listening to Australian podcasts! Written by Broad City’s Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs, Rough Night stars Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer and Zoë Kravitz, who all became close friends on set.

The Mummythemummytomcruisedvd

Genre: Action
Classification: M
Audience: Adult
Release Date: September 6

Nick Morton is a soldier of fortune who plunders ancient sites for timeless artefacts and sells them to the highest bidder. When Nick and his partner come under attack in the Middle East, the ensuing battle accidentally unearths Ahmanet, a betrayed Egyptian princess who was entombed under the desert for thousands of years. With her powers constantly evolving, Morton must now stop the resurrected monster as she embarks on a furious rampage through the streets of London.

Hold on to your hats – this could get really confusing. So The Mummy (2017) is a modern-day retelling of The Mummy (1999) which was influenced by The Mummy (1959), a film based on The Mummy (1932). Got that? Good. Anyway – starring Tom Cruise, this version of The Mummy is a thrill-a-minute, action packed new spin on an age-old story.

Rawrawdvd

Genre: Horror
Language: French
Classification: R18+
Audience: Adult
Release Date: September 20

A teenage girl joins her sister at a prestigious veterinary college and is forced to partake in a hazing ritual that sees her defying her vegan upbringing by consuming raw rabbit liver. From here she develops an insatiable desire for flesh – of all types. Raw is a coming-of-age film like no other.

When Raw was screened at the Toronto film festival, paramedics were called after several audience members fainted. According to a Swedish tabloid, around thirty cinemagoers at the Gothenburg Film Festival left the screening in horror, while two audience members fainted. This French-Belgian film is getting rave reviews, but it might not be to everyone’s (ahem) taste. In fact, even the trailer’s pretty gross. Here’s the only still image we could find that doesn’t involve lots of blood and guts…

Pirates of the Caribbean 5potc5dvd

Genre: Action

Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artefact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Who’d have thought a film franchise based on a Disneyland ride would be such a success? Fourteen years after The Curse of the Black Pearl comes Dead Men Tell No Tales – the fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Initially, this was thought to be the final Pirates film, but a sixth film has already been announced. Yo ho ho!

All Eyez onalleyezonmedvd Me

Genre: Drama, Biography
Classification: MA15+
Audience: Adult
Release Date: September 20

The true and untold story of prolific rapper, actor, poet and activist Tupac Shakur – from his early days in New York to his status as one of the world’s most recognised and influential voices. Against all odds, Shakur’s raw talent, powerful lyrics and revolutionary mind-set establish him as a cultural icon whose legacy continues to grow long after his death.

When Benny Boom, the director of All Eyez on Me first saw a photo of actor, Demetrius Shipp Jr. he mistook him for Tupac himself. When he was cast in the film, Shipp set about losing nearly ten kilograms to play the role of the enigmatic rapper. The connection between Shipp and Shakur is stronger than that: Shipp’s father worked as a producer on Shakur’s album, The 7 Day Theory, released two months after his murder.

Veep: Season 6veeps6dvd

Genre: Television Series, Comedy
Classification: MA15+
Audience: Adult
Release Date: September 13

Former Senator Selina Meyer has accepted the call to serve as Vice President of the United States. The job is nothing like she imagined and everything she was warned about. Veep follows Meyer and her staff as they attempt to make their mark and leave a lasting legacy, without getting tripped up in the day-to-day political games that define Washington.

In Season Six of Veep, Selina is adrift in New York and still surrounded by the same characters – her assistants, Gary and Richard – and her ex, Andrew, is back in the picture. This multi award-winning series is a welcome escape from the sobering realities of real-life American politics. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays Selina Meyer, says: “I think that Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started off as a political satire but now feels more like a sobering documentary”. Sometimes, truth really is stranger than fiction…

Impressed? This is just the beginning. Also coming out this month are the latest seasons of Supernatural and The Walking Dead – as well a new documentary about Australian artist, Brett Whiteley that looks great.
