October’s already here (hello, warmer weather – we’ve missed you!) and we’re excited, because there’s a whole heap of amazing titles ready and raring to hit library shelves across Australia!

It’s a big, biiiig month for young adult titles, with the first season of Riverdale coming out in just a couple of days, as well as Descendants 2, and the latest season of Adventure Time – which is a hit with younger kids too…and even adults! Plus, there’s the new Spider-Man film, Homecoming, in which Peter Parker has to keep New York safe…while attending high school.

We’ve also got two hotly anticpated drama titles coming out really soon – My Cousin Rachel, based on the Daphne du Maurier novel, as well as The Beguiled, which stars Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning and more. Plus, just in time for Halloween, there’s a new Chucky film to scare the absolute socks off a whole new generation of fans.

As always, choosing just ten titles to feature wasn’t the easiest of tasks – but nonetheless, here are our Top Ten for October, in no particular order…

Spider-Man: Homecomingspidermanhomecoming

Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter Parker – aka Spider-Man – returns home to Queens, New York, where he lives with his Aunt May. Under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark, Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine, distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, but when the Vulture emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds dear will be threatened.

Born in 1996, Tom Holland is the youngest actor to portray Spider-Man. To prepare for his role in Homecoming, Tom and the rest of the cast gathered at his house for a John Hughes movie marathon, including The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink and more.

(If the realisation that all these movies were released ten years before Tom Holland was born makes you feel old, you’re not alone…)

Genre: Drama, Mystery
Classification: M
Audience: Adult, Young Adult
Release Date: October 4

After the death of one of the rich and popular Blossom twins on the 4th of July, the small town of Riverdale investigates the murder. The series starts in September, the beginning of a new school year, that brings with it new students, relationships, and reveals the mysteries of the past 4th of July.

Based on the characters from Archie, a series of comics that debuted in 1939, Riverdale is a subversive modern take on the wholesome version of small-town American life portrayed in the original graphic novels. Riverdale was originally going to be a feature film until the show’s creators fell in love with the characters and pitched the show as a series instead. Season two is due to air in America (and here in Australia via Netflix) later this month, so now’s the perfect time to catch up with Archie, Veronica, Jughead and the rest of the gang.

Rumour has it, Mariah Carey was supposed to make a cameo appearance in The House, but when her demands – including white flowers and toy lambs for her trailer – left the cast and crew frustrated, the scenes were never filmed.

Transformers: The Last Knightthelastknightdvd

The Last Knight is the fifth live action Transformers film…and with a whopping $217 million budget, it’s the most expensive one yet! This is the last Transformers film with director, Michael Bay at the helm – for now, at least. The Beguiledthebeguileddvd

Genre: Drama
Classification: M
Audience: Adult
Release Date: October 25

Cpl. John McBurney is an injured Union soldier who finds himself on the run as a deserter during the Civil War. He seeks refuge at an all-female Southern boarding school where the teachers and students seem more than willing to help. Soon, sexual tension leads to dangerous rivalries as the women tend to his wounded leg while offering him comfort and companionship.

Sofia Coppola won the Best Director award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for her work on The Beguiled – the second time a woman has won the award in the award’s 71-year history.

Bonus fact: Keep an eye out for the scene in which Nicole Kidman’s character gives Colin Farrell’s character a sponge bath. Due to the fickle afternoon light, shooting was difficult. By the time the scene wrapped, Nicole Kidman had spent almost two hours bathing Farrell. It’s a tough life, acting…

Descendants 2descendants2dvd

Ever wondered what would happen if the heroes and villains of some of your favourite Disney stories had kids? That’s the idea behind the Descendants films – the biggest thing to hit the teen world since High School Musical! With catchy tunes and a fun story, Descendants 2 is already breaking records. Here’s the trailer:

Cult of Chuccultofchuckydvdky

If you grew up in the 80s or early 90s, chances are you had the absolute stuffing scared out of you by Child’s Play, released in 1988. Now, nearly 30 years later comes Cult of Chucky – the seventh film starring Chucky, a cute doll who also happens to be an evil homicidal maniac. Already, horror fans are saying it’s just as good as the original. If you’re into (really) scary films, why not judge for yourself?
