Top Ten December New Releases

December New Releases BannerDecember is just about here, and without a doubt, it’s the biggest month of the year when it comes to exciting new releases! In fact, as much as we love our jobs, we’re kind of looking forward to taking a little bit of time off over the Christmas break to binge on as many of these films and television shows as we possibly can!

With soldiers, zombies, spies, queens, superheroes and emjois, December’s new release schedule has something for everyone. In no particular order, here are just ten titles that we’re eager to see on our screens this month…

Dunkirkdunkirk

Genre: War, Drama
Classification: M
Audience: Adult
Release Date: December 18

In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found.

Dunkirk is one of 2017’s most critically acclaimed films, and brings together an enormous cast – including literally thousands of extras – to tell an epic story of war and courage. Writer and director, Christopher Nolan, went to extraordinary lengths to make this film look and feel as authentic as possible, mounting cameras the wings of aircraft, and even having cameramen floating in the water with actors. Around thirty veterans of the Dunkirk evacuation attended the film’s premiere in London, and, when asked about the film, they said that it was extremely accurate…although the film was louder.

Kingsman: The Golden Circlekingsmanthegoldencircledvd

In an adventure that tests their strength and wits, the elite secret agents from both sides of the pond band together to battle a ruthless enemy and save the day.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is the follow up to 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service. The series has been described by critics as “James Bond, on speed”, and it’s loosely based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name by Mark Millar. The sequel boasts the same offbeat humour as the first film, as well as a star-studded cast that includes five Oscar winners – Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, Colin Firth…and Elton John. Fans will be happy to know that there’s already a third Kingsman film in the works.

Victoriavictoriaandabduldvd & Abdul

Genre: Drama, Biography
Classification: PG
Audience: Adult
Release Date: December 13

Abdul Karim, a young clerk, arrives from India to participate in Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, and is surprised to form a friendship with the Queen herself. As Victoria questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance that her household and inner circle try to destroy. As their friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes.

Victoria and Abdul is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by journalist Shrabani Basu, in which she investigates the real-life friendship between Queen Victoria and her servant, Abdul Karim. In case you were wondering, no, this isn’t the first time Dame Judi Dench has played Queen Victoria. She’s also played Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love.

Game of Thrones: Season 7gameofthronesseason7

Genre: Fantasy, Drama
Classification: MA15+
Audience: Adult
Release Date: December 13

In Westeros, summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne continues. It stretches from the south, where heat breeds plots, lusts and intrigues, to the vast and savage eastern lands, where a young queen raises an army. All the while, in the frozen north, an 800-foot wall of ice precariously protects the war-ravaged kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men…all play the Game of Thrones.

From Queen Victoria in Victoria and Abdul, to Queen Elizabeth II and Game of Thrones! The Queen and Prince Philip visited the Game of Thrones set while visiting Northern Ireland and met members of the cast. Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark in the series, commented that she “did not get the impression that she is a fan”, unfortunately. The Queen was offered the opportunity to sit on the Iron Throne, but declined, as the Queen isn’t technically allowed to sit on the throne of any other country – not even Westeros. Season 7 is the second last season of Game of Thrones, and with Season 8 not due to screen until late 2018 or even early 2019, fans have a long wait ahead…

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Moviecaptainunderpants

Genre: Animated, Comedy
Classification: G

Release Date: December 13

George and Harold are two overly imaginative pranksters who spend hours creating comic books. When their mean principal threatens to separate them into different classes, the mischievous boys accidentally hypnotize him into thinking that he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.

American author, Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants books have been making kids laugh for twenty years now. Yep, believe it or not, Pilkey’s debut, The Adventures of Captain Underpants, came out all the way back in 1997. Since then, Pilkey has published eleven more Captain Underpants novels, as well as a number of spinoff series, leaving heaps of material for a cinematic sequel! Captain Underpants combines plot points from several of the books, and features a theme song by Weird Al Yankovic, who Pilkey frequently mentions in his novels.

A scientist and a teacher living in a dystopian future embark on a journey of survival with a special young girl named Melanie.

Based on the smash-hit novel by British comic book writer, M R Carey, The Girl with All the Gifts is set in a not-too-distant future England devastated by disease. Some of the aerial shots of abandoned London that you’ll see in the film were actually shot near Chernobyl, using drones. Made on a shoestring budget of just four million pounds, The Girl with All the Gifts is already in the running for a BAFTA award – it’s picked up a few other award nominations too. Here’s the trailer, but if you want to remain completely spoiler-free, you might want to steer clear of this one…

American Madeamericanmade

Genre: Action
Classification: MA15+
Audience: Adult
Release Date: December 6

Barry Seal, a TWA pilot, is recruited by the CIA to provide reconnaissance on the burgeoning communist threat in Central America and soon finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the United States. The operation spawns the birth of the Medellin cartel and almost brings down the Reagan White House.

Why let the truth get in the way of a good story? The promotional material for American Made says the film is alternately “based on a true story” and “based on a true lie”. While there’s some truth to this story, it’s mostly fiction…not that you’ll mind, because you’ll have so much fun enjoying this critically acclaimed action flick you won’t have time to stop and think! American Made is Tom Cruise’s second big film for 2017. The first, The Mummy, was released a couple of months ago.

Pitting father against son, the epic showdown tests these fierce but undisciplined modern-day ninjas as they learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash the inner power of Spinjitzu.

The Lego Ninjago Movie is 2017’s second Lego movie. The first, The Lego Batman Movie came out on DVD in June (and, for the record, I really liked it!). The Lego Ninjago Movie is based on the hugely popular TV series for kids, with a few plot twists here and there to keep fans guessing. Wondering what’s next for the Lego Cinematic Universe? The Lego Movie 2 is due towards the start of 2019.

Together, they embark on an epic app-venture to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger surfaces, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.

Everyone’s talking about The Emoji Movie – and is it any wonder?
