We asked our staff to pick their favourite and least favourite films from 2017, so here are…

THE BEST

Bre:
Moana
I’m a massive fan of Disney and Lin-Manuel Miranda, so it’s no wonder that I absolutely loved Moana. It’s lot of fun, plus it’s visually stunning.

Table 19 I didn’t know what to expect, but this offbeat rom-com was sweet and genuinely funny. The dramatics were kept to a minimum, the characters were interesting and the ending, while predictable, managed to keep out of eye-roll territory.

I, Daniel Blake Absolutely gut wrenching movie. If you do not cry during the final scene, you’re dead inside. It’s not the most enjoyable film to watch – actually it’s pretty darn depressing – but it is brilliantly made and will stick with you.Idanielblake

Conor:
Beauty and the Beast I saw this film at the cinema earlier this year – I’d watched the Disney animated version of this film when I was kid – and when I saw the remake the narrative, characters and songs were all familiar but in a déjà vu way.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children I watched this at the cinema as well, and it’s on my best list because I found the story line interesting. I liked the ‘time loop’ concept; I also enjoyed how the plot starts with a grandfather telling bedtime stories to his grandson, but then the setting of the film completely changes.

Rogue One: a Star Wars Story is one of my favourite films of this year with Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn as the evil weapons developer, Orson Krennic.rogue-one

Trish:
War for the planet of the Apes (Best Action) Go Team Ape! This is how you do CGI. Great acting, more moving than most of this year’s dramas.

The LEGO Batman Movie (Best Kids/Superhero) Hilarious, not just for kids. Love this Batman.

The Big Sick (Best Romantic Comedy) Lovely movie. Clever, funny & sweet. Avoids the typical shallow cliches. Great ensemble cast.

A Quiet Passion (Best Costume Drama/Bio) Not for everyone. Intelligent dialogue driven drama. Would recommend for anyone with an interest in the life and times of Emily Dickinson and also likes slow cinema.

Lukas:
The Big Sick Being that it’s based off of Kumail’s real relationship to his now wife, there is a wonderful touch of honesty and care to this story that makes it exceptionally pleasant to spend time watching.

Blade Runner 2049  Just for the set and lighting design and cinematography alone this is visually stunning.

Get Out A new take on the horror genre with an underlying theme of socio-racial issues, this was really suspenseful and a mastery in film-making, specially from a first time director.

Honorable Mentions:
T2 Trainspotting
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Manchester by the Sea
La La Land
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Hacksaw Ridge
Silence
Wind River
Logan LuckyGet Out

and, THE WORST…

Bre:
The Comedian’s Guide to Survival I love The Inbetweeners, enjoyed White Goldand think James Buckley is amazing, so I was expecting a lot. Unfortunately it was unfunny to the point of cringe.

The Family Fang Fantastic concept, exceptionally boring movie. I struggled to engage with this at all.

Snatched This movie has a lot of terrible reviews and for a good reason. Although I don’t like Amy Schumer I tried to give it a chance, especially seeing that Goldie Hawn was in it. Unfortunately it was painfully unfunny and just a mess of a film.snatched

Conor:
Fantastic beasts and Where to Find Them
This film is on my worst films list not because I disliked it, but because I didn’t connect with some of the main characters. This had something to do with the use of 1930’s New York as a backdrop which I feel like I’ve seen too regularly in popular culture. Overall I enjoyed the film, but for me it lacked because the setting was a bit too familiar.fantasticbeasts

Trish:
Churchill
I don’t care about historical inaccuracies, what bugs me is an overly melodramatic, repetitive movie that manages to make Churchill uninteresting.

Lukas:
Justice League
Non-sequential redundant scenes and incoherent plot lines makes this a stinking pile of gross stuff. Do your brain and dignity a favour – don’t watch this.

Dunkirk Visually is looks fine, but that’s it. I honestly believe it was just an IMAX experiment for Christopher Nolan, as it was boring and had no script (literally. The production only had a “guideline”). If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Wonder Woman DC are just making rubbish now. This had so much potential, but it’s just totally overrated. So many plot holes, corny lines and gags that miss the mark, but keep beating a dead horse.

Shawn:
Colossal
Every other film I watched this year was a masterpiece when compared to this absolutely terrible film. Hence it’s the only one on my worst list. Don’t watch this film!colossal
