The Favourite – Film Club Review

thefavouriteThe latest film from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) is a wildly entertaining dark-comedy period-piece, featuring Oscar-winning actress, Olivia Coleman.

The Favourite | MA15+ | BiographyA five-star rating

In early 18th century England, a frail Queen Anne occupies the throne and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs the country in her stead. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah.

There was so much to enjoy about this film! The performances were excellent, the constant shift of dynamics between the three main characters was entertaining and the set design and wardrobe provided a wonderfully rich visual setting. Though the underlying storyline is flimsy, the focus on characters and their witty Old-English-come-modern dialogue keeps your attention through the entire film. Very deserving of its award season buzz in my opinion.

This was one of my favourite films of the year. Yorgos Lanthimos has continually surprised me with his consistency over the last few years and this film didn’t let me down. It was thoroughly entertaining, witty and just absurd enough to keep me intrigued. Highly recommend.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get into this one. I’m a fan of all of the other Yorgos Lanthimos films I’ve seen, so this was both a surprise and a disappointment. There was no respite to the caustic, bitter tone, and for a comedy I didn’t find that the jokes were very well written. It mainly seemed like the same joke of ‘royalty behaving badly’ over and over. Overall I felt the film needed either more witty material or a stronger narrative.
