Fast Five Review: Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast
Family | Musical | 2017

It’s a tale as old as time. Belle, a beautiful young woman from a quiet French village finds herself imprisoned in an enchanted castle, filled with talking (and singing) household objects who were formerly the castle’s staff – and, of course, a towering Beast, doomed to remain beastly forever until he finds true love. Oh, and also, he’s a prince. Surely you know the rest? This live-action remake of the animated classic from 1991 boasts an all-star cast as well as new songs and scenes that will delight fans – new and old.

1) Did you like it?

Yes. It’s an enjoyable film…but I have a few issues.

2) Why?

Why indeed? What’s the point of spending squillions of dollars remaking a classic film everyone loves, nearly shot-by-shot? Nostalgia, I guess – already the new version of Beauty and the Beast is the tenth highest-grossing film of all time. But…why? I was under the impression that this would be a more feminist take on the classic tale. Belle invents a washing machine. That’s feminist…how, exactly? Sure, there are new additions to the story, including a tacked-on scene to explain what happened to Belle’s mother, but this only introduces new plotholes to a story that – let’s be honest – was already full of them.

The CGI is beautiful, the songs are as catchy as ever…and the film’s climactic ballroom scene will melt even the heart of a wannabe film critic.

3) You’ll enjoy this movie if…

You grew up with the original film on VCR and played it until you knew all the words.

4) This movie made me think about…

Nostalgia. Disney are already working on a live action remake of The Lion King. There’s talk that a live action Dumbo (!?) directed by Tim Burton (!?!?!) might be next. Other titles being thrown around online for potential remakes are Mulan, Mary Poppins, Aladdin… I’d love to see Disney spend their resources telling new stories instead. How great was Moana?

5) Overall rating?

This was a tricky one to rate…
